How to Set Up a Wireless Home Network connection

Is it time for a WiFi network at home? To begin, contact your local ISP (internet service provider) and have them hook up their internet service in your home. When they do this, you will be given a modem that will connect to the cable or telephone jack (depending on the type of internet you are receiving). When the modem is plugged in, ensure the power light is one.

To set up your WiFi network, you will also require a wireless router. These can be purchased at your local office or computer supply store. Your router will need to be connected directly to your internet modem. When doing this, either unplug or turn off your modem.

Plug your new router into a power outlet and turn the unit on. Your router likely has come with a cable that will connect it to the modem via the “internet” or “WAN” port on the router and the cable or DSL (used for telephone connection) on the modem. You can now turn the modem on.

Your router will have come with an IP address and directions for setting linking your computer with the router for internet access through the modem. You will now be setting up a local area connection for your home. Although you are setting up a network to use as a wireless form of internet connection, to get the network set up you will need to plug a computer into the router. From this computer, enter the IP address into the search bar of your internet icon (Firefox, Google, Internet Explorer etc.). This will bring you to the manufacturer’s site. Once you are prompted for a username and password, enter the information as in the paperwork that accompanied your router.

During this process you will be changing the SSID, or the name of your network, and the default password provided with your router. You will also want to change the security settings manually so that you maintain control of your network.

Once you have completed the initial set up of the network, verify with the computer used for this process that the internet is accessible. Once this is successful, connect other devices to your network by searching the available networks near you, selecting your network by choosing the name you gave it and entering your password. You should now be connected to the internet via your own Wi-Fi network.  If you are searching for wireless internet provider in your area, you can visit to compare plans, prices, read reviews and choose from a variety of wireless high-speed internet services available to you.
